As a kid, one of the things I loved the most about the cinema were the ads.
The likes of Playstation, Guinness, Stella & Lynx always ensured they were mini blockbusters in themselves.
Looking back, I think it was their outlandish scale I was most drawn to.
Crash. Bang. Wallop. They’d show something so relatable and then grow it to the impossible.
So when the brief of ‘unadulterated play’ landed in front of me. I owed it to my younger self to scratch that itch.
Red Balloon was the first film I wrote (which never happens). With Director ‘Sam Brown’ and post-house 'ETC' at the wheel (again) it went on to inspire Gameshows, social media tournaments and the entirety of Kyiv (before Russia) to chase a red Balloon.
Yes. It was as fun as it looked to make.
(And no it never ran in the cinema )
